About the Artist I work in a variety of media, including oil, acrylic, watercolour, enamel, collage and mixed media, often with a limited colour palette, and on a scale ranging from small sketches to large paintings. The smaller paint sketches can be a starting point for a larger finished work, or can be an end in themselves. I use them to explore aspects of painting which interest me, such as the emotional resonance of certain colours, the different effects achieved through dripping, dragging, layering and glazing, how the thickness or dilution, opacity or translucency of the applied paint affects the final outcome. I am also interested in the interplay between the controlled application of paint and the effects of chance, the tension between considered intent and spontaneity. In seeking to express my own feelings and emotions intuitively, I deliberately avoid figurative references, leaving space for the viwer to project their own subconscious associations.
