About the Artist Before starting her career in photography, Wendy Tipene was a passionate youth worker in Brisbane’s Logan City, one of the poorest regions of South East Queensland. It was here that she discovered her passion to help victims of domestic violence and to make a difference in her local community. Wendy soon realized that her ability to help was the victims was restricted by the confined boxes of governing agencies. Wendy then decided to follow her passion for photography and now uses the medium to communicate awareness and to promote stand against domestic violence. The Take a Stand body of work has been developed to help bring awareness to Domestic Violence on a local and national scale. In this series of images, Wendy has captured 44 portraits including 49 men, women and children from diverse cultural, economic and geographic backgrounds. This number reflects a small number towards the 53 deaths caused by domestic violence in Australia in 2015 (number correct as of 11th of October 2015).
