About the Artist
My name is Macie Matthews and I am a digital illustrator based in Central California. ​ Recently, my studies in Japan allowed me to explore the other half of my upbringing that previously had been limited by an Americanized understanding of Japanese culture. As I analyzed the societal structure and language, I came to the understanding that Japan contains both traditional, spiritualistic roots as well as a modern, technology driven era. I studied how the coexistence of the two creates a continuous dialogue between the past and the present. ​I create digital paintings and rubber-stamp prints that illustrate scenes of modernity and tradition. I illustrate different aspects of both lifestyles, closely comparing how they help each other to create the society standing today.
